Our Online Think Tank is searching the Internet to find geniuses in our society and it is a lot more difficult than you might think. One super star researcher, a genius in his own right and a professor of psychology states that it may not be so easy to find the geniuses of our time by way of Internet Search. Indeed one member of the Online Think Tank agrees and states;
"Yes, I think he might be right. In that there is a guy in NY who is said to have an IQ of 185 or some ridiculously high number who is writing a book he hopes to publish one day and he does not even have an email address to contact him?"
Additionally the world is filled with self-proclaimed geniuses. And yet many of the geniuses we hold in high self-esteem today; Tesla, Edison, Benjamin Franklin and da Vinci, were also masterful promoters? So, some of these self-proclaimed geniuses might be and thus would need to be tested simply due to the possibility?
One Think Tanker asks; "Have you given any thoughts to criteria for such a search, Perhaps to alleviate some of the false negatives? Even if we couldn't find all the geniuses, is it possible to find some of them? In other words is it worthy of the attempt? And could we benefit in locating some of these folks which have been missed? How much would it cost do you think to do this? If one were to partake in such a study, how long would it take do you imagine? The results might come back rather immediately, but the sifting might take months right?"
Obviously those who are not on the Internet would be problematic to find that way. Those already in academia, most likely have already been noted somewhere along the way? So this search would be more for the one's that slipped thru the cracks or are simply not interested in awards and such. And to that point would you say that the geniuses in lets say the US is .5% of the total population? What is your best guess? This is a hard question to answer for anyone as there really is not a good definition as to what a genius really is.
In the book "Origins of Genius" it does provide discussion on the "definition" of a true genius. The Online Think Tank has turned to the Internet to ask others out in cyber space;
"Do you believe that such a definition exists? Have you written your own definition that I might use?"
